About This Age Calculator
This age calculator from date of birth determines a person’s age or the time difference between two dates, displaying results in years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. It follows the most common age system, where a person’s age increases on their birthday. For example, someone who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is considered 3 years old, and their age will become 4 on their next birthday. This method is widely used in Western countries.
Different Age Calculation Methods
- In some cultures, age is counted differently. For instance, in traditional Chinese systems, a baby is born at age 1, and their age increases at the Chinese New Year, not their birthday. A baby born a day before the New Year would be considered 2 years old just two days later, despite being only two days old.
- Our free age calculator uses the standard Western system, but keep in mind that other methods may yield different results.
Handling Month-End Dates
This date of birth calculator may sometimes produce confusing results when calculating months and days near month-end dates. For example:
- Feb 20 to Mar 20 = 1 month
- Feb 28 to Mar 31 can be calculated in two ways:
- Method 1 (Same-day counting): Feb 28 → Mar 28 = 1 month, plus 3 extra days = 1 month and 3 days
- Method 2 (Month-end counting): Both dates treated as month-end = 1 month
Our age calculator by date of birth follows Method 1 (same-day counting), which is more precise for most cases. Similar scenarios occur with dates like Apr 30 to May 31 or May 30 to June 30 due to varying month lengths.
Whether you’re using this as an age calculator app or applying the age calculator formula manually, understanding these nuances ensures accurate results.
